Name the learning goal
An MVP is useful when it tests a consequential uncertainty. Write the decision you need to make before choosing features: will the target customer complete the core task, accept the proposed workflow, or return after a first use?
Choose one primary user and one job. If success requires several unrelated audiences to behave differently at once, narrow the test.
Map the smallest complete journey
List the steps from discovering the offer to receiving the promised value. Include the work your team does manually. A concierge process or clickable prototype can answer some questions more cheaply than production software; it cannot validate every reliability or scale assumption.
Keep safety, consent, and necessary privacy controls in scope. ‘Minimum’ does not excuse misleading participants or exposing their data.
Sort the backlog
| Group | Question | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Is this needed to deliver or observe the core outcome? | Include in the test |
| Supporting | Can a person or simple process handle it? | Try the manual alternative |
| Later | Does this serve a different user or decision? | Put it outside the current scope |
For each included feature, connect an assumption and define how completion will be checked. Avoid a backlog in which every item is labeled critical.
Write one clear user story
As [user], I want to [action] so that [outcome].
Add observable acceptance criteria: what happens with valid input, missing information, a failed dependency, and an unauthorized request? Name the person who will review the result.
Set the test and stopping rule
Record the participant criteria, time window, success measure, known limitations, and conditions for stopping. Use the experiment guide to establish a threshold before seeing the result.
After testing, compare the observation with the original question. Decide whether to improve the experience, change the hypothesis, or stop. More completed features are not automatically more learning.
Put this into practice
Keep your evidence, decisions, and next actions together in your venture workspace.
